Epson AcuLaser CX11 printer won't print (Lucid)

Till, can you please take a look asap?

In the past week something has become weird with the problem. It hasn't worked ever since I moved to Lucid, but at least it used to only give me one option when I searched for a network printer. Now it's showing two options for the same Epson printer (actually, three, since it's also showing an old USB hook-up I used with an old Mac so that I could scan images with it). It seems to be pulling old preference files from my router, which I had set up with my old Mac...?

Not sure if this is complicating the setup but it can't be helping.

you also seem to have a Xerox WorkCentre 7228 printer configured, but it doesn't actually turn up in your recent screenshot. Does this actually exist? If so, does printing to that one work? It's connected through the same mechanism (dnssd), and I wonder if it's that protocol which is broken with cups (a similar report in bug 566887 seems to indicate that), or whether it's the actual printer driver which is broken.

Can you please launch the printer setup tool, Server -> Settings -> Save debugging information for troubleshooting, OK the dialog. Then try to print something. Disable the debug logging checkbox again, and attach /var/log/cups/error_log here.

If the other printer also does not work: Is it possible for you to attach the printer directly via USB? It should get automatically discovered and configured. Does it print then?

has been several weeks since I was in Millbank, and while I vaguely
remember it working, I can't be absolutely certain.

See above. I'm not sure if it works or not, but I believe it does not.

I can check on the USB connection to my Epson printer, but not for
another hour or so. (I have the printer in my daughters' room, which
also serves as my server closet. :-) Fwiw, when I print to file or
print PDF, that works....

I have installed Lucid final release (alternante install) and with clean install. My Epson T20E printer is detected as usual (with a T20 driver) but when used to print there is no any output on the printer.
in Karmic everything goes smoothly.

Note: My printer is connected directly to a USB cable

Djoko, your problem is a completely different one, most probably it is bug 468701 or bug 539708.

It's every file (HTML pages on the web, OpenOffice docs, etc.) I try to
print.

it occurs quite often in the logs. Could this be the reason for the breakage?

appearing repeatedly in your error_log? What is your locale (run the "locale" command in a terminal window and post the output here).

Matt, can you run the follwing commands in a terminal window:

cupsctl FileDevice=yes
lpadmin -p test -E -v /tmp/printout -P /etc/cups/ppd/EPSON-AL-CX11.ppd

Then print to the printer named "test", wait until the job disappears from the queue and attach the /tmp/printout file here. Do this with several files.

Also have a look at the /tmp/printout files (they are PostScript) using the Document Viewer (evince).

I did not see such a message before, it can be caused only by the particular file, but can also be dependent on the user's locale.

Djoko, the proposed fix for bug 539708 is available now. Please see the instructions there for applying it and report whether it helped you.

pitti, the "Illegal entry in bfrange block ..." message comes from pdftops as pdftopdf already finished before the first occurence of the message.

I tried printing to USB but...nothing. Ubuntu auto-discovered the
printer, installed the driver/etc., but then nothing happens.

To be able to open and attach /tmp/printout files, run the command

chmod 777 /tmp/printout

Where do I find the error logs?

The printouts are working (see attached for one), but I don't know where
to access error logs.

Follow Martin Pitt's instructions of comment #4, but where he says "print something", print 5 files from different applications and after each file wait until the job completes ("lpstat -o" does not have any output). When having finished the 5 jobs, attach your /var/log/cups/error_log file to this bug report. It then contains the logging of all the 5 jobs.

Matt, can you also send jobs to your "test" queue and attach the resulting /tmp/printout files, as I described in comment #12 and comment #17?

Matt, now I found it: It seems that your printer is not a PostScript printer but system-config-printer has assigned the PPD file for its bigger Brother (which is a PostScript printer) to it.

This printer is not supported by the standard Ubuntu installation. You need to get the Epson driver as described on http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=973233.

One question: Did you have to go to manufacturer/model/driver selection screens when setting up your print queue or after pluygging the printer to the USB?

Matt, another question: How did you get your printer working in Karmic?

If you do not know any more, try a Karmic live CD.

I just installed it and it worked. Nothing special.

Hi guys, did you ever get this resolved? I have the identical problem with the CX11N via USB in Lucid. The only difference between Matt's CX11NF and my CX11N is the fax which I believe has no PC connectivity anyway.

Chris, Matt, use the manufacturer-supplied driver from http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=973233 to get your printers work for the everyday printing. Can you please also follow my instructions in comment #27 of this bug report so that we can perhaps make your printers working again without external driver? Thanks in advance.

Same problem with Epson S21. Didn't happen in 9.10, but appears both in Ubuntu and Lubuntu 10.04.

Chris (and perhaps Matt, too), can you tell me whether you needed a manufacturer-supplied driver to make your printer working under Karmic? Or did it work with Karmic out-of-the-box. If it worked with Karmic out-of-the-box, please attach the PPD file (from /etc/cups/ppd/) which was used for your printer. With this I can find out why it does not work under Lucid any more. If you do not have a Karmic installation, try this with a Live CD. Thanks.

Nickpick, your problem is a completely different one, most probably it is bug 468701 or bug 539708. The latter has a proposed fix. Try this one first.

Till, unfortunately it sounds a lot more skin to this bug than the other two. In fact, it sounds almost identical to the issue I'm having, with the sole exception that I reconnect to the printer directly through USB (which seems mildly irrelevant at this point). I've already posted on the forum and there seem to be at least two other people having the same issue with the same printer. Repost:

Till, unfortunately I cannot tell you anything about the behaviour under Karmic because... (he said hiding his blushing face) I am a TOTAL noob to Linux, let alone Ubuntu. This time last week I hadn't even heard of the word Ubuntu but fortuitously and accidentally stumbled across Lucid the day after its official launch (last Friday) and it was love at first sight and two fingers up to Microsoft! Brilliant timing eh?! I run my business from my computer and after testing my requirements was ready to switch over hook, line and sinker from Windows to Ubuntu, however being unable to print is a dealbreaker since I clearly cannot run my business without being able to print! Hence my desperation to get this working. Coincidentally I'm picking up a new printer tomorrow, but that's an A3 printer... however you can bet that I checked first that it is supported by Lucid!

Anyway, yes when I successfully print out of Windows and send a doc to the printer 3 things happen... 1) the "Data" light on the printer flashes for a couple of seconds, then 2) you hear a little 'click' as an internal micro switch powers it into action, and lastly after a further pause 3) it prints. With Ubuntu I get the flashing data light like Nickpick does, but I don't get the click or the printing. The print manager however, seems to think that the document has printed. As far as the OS is concerned, it seems to think it's printing fine.

Till, would it help if I downloaded a Karmic CD and tried that?

Chris, it would be great if you could do that before selling or giving away your Epson.

Ok Till, I tried Karmic. I can confirm that the behaviour of the printer is exactly the same. In other words no, it didn't work out-of-the-box. I didn't try any manufacturer-supplied driver though. It defaulted to 'generic' on startup but when searching for drivers under System>Adminitration>Printing it recognises that it's a CX11 but searches and chooses a CX21 driver, which when installed still doesn't work.

Chris, this looks like that at least a straightforward automatic installation has never worked for this printer.

What you can try, and now you should do it on your installed Lucid, is to manually pick a possible driver. Try other Epson AcuLaser models (for example C2000) and choose the "eplaser" driver. Note that your printer does not understand PostScript or PCL.

Ok Till, I'll have a play around and make a few educated/guesstimated stabs in the dark. Naturally I'll report back because either I'll get it working, in which case it'll be useful information to the Ubuntu community or it won't, in which case I'll be all the more desperate for help! :-)

I tried 32 drivers (that was exciting... yawn!). I tried all of the AcuLaser ones (apart from the PS ones) and all of the AL ones. In each instance I only tried the "recommended" one. They all had the same effect except one - the C2000 which you recommended. That behaved differently to the rest. All the others either just made the data light flash or did nothing at all. The C2000 however did steps 1 and 2 in post #36. In other words prior to making the data light flash it "clicked" the internal micro-switch and powered up the LCD screen. It looked like it was about to print the test page, but then nothing happened. I therefore tried all 7 other C2000 drivers to no avail.

At what point is it sensible to give up trying this method. Should I start trying Epson drivers from other model series? Is it just pot luck rather than an educated guess?

I've tried installing drivers from the avasis site, but either I don't know how to do it,
or those drivers have the same problem.

I attached now the error log obtained from the troubleshooting of the system-config-printer.
The only reported I could find is like this, and appears many times:

I'll put this here as it seems to be related to this bug. If it should be somewhere else please let me know. It doesn't seem to be related to the other alternative bugs above.

I've got an Epson Stylus D92, similar symptoms - prints nothing all. The print jobs all go to the queue, whatever the job, but I always get status of "Stopped - Printer configuration error" - this seems to apply to any data at all sent to the printer.

On pressing help I eventually get a message that there is a file missing but can find no reference to the file on google or synaptic. It is
/usr/lib/cups/filter/commandtoepsom for printer Stylus_D92 not available

This setup was previously working well under 8.04 and only shows this problem on updating to 10.04. The driver ( make and model ) is Epson Stylus D68 - CUPS+Gutenprint v5.0.2 Simplified. This same as was working with 8.04.

Also enclosing error report which I understand nothing of.

Leandro, do you have the /var/spool/cups directory and does it have the correct permissions?

You can fix this by reinstalling CUPS:

I've reinstalled cups to test and nothing changed.

Felix, thw PDF,ppd is not important for this bug, the needed one is the other.

The other PPD is of a very old Gutenprint version. Somehow Gutenprint does not auto-update it. So please remove your print queue and recreate it, then you should get the correct PPD file.

I'm not sure this went as intended.
I removed all the files from the print queue ( does this remove it? ) but this had no effect on the file /etc/cups/ppd/Stylus-D92.ppd
I then printed a job which went into the queue but didn't print ( as before ). The file you wanted was still unchanged. Then I tried removing the epson D92 printer. This removed the file. Unfortunately when I tried to put the printer back it couldn't find a suitable driver nor was I allowed to select the correct one at any stage. Neither D92, nor D68 ( as used before ) were listed. I just had to pick one, I tried EPSON Stylus photo 750. I wasn't expecting too much as it was the wrong driver. The jobs no longer got stuck in the queue but nothing printed.

I'm sending the file you wanted anyway, the file name refers to D92 but not the contents?

I have a file /usr/share/foomatic/db/source/printer/Epson-Stylus_D68.xml on my computer, the only file containing "D68" in the name, is this the driver I need? Slightly out of my depth here.

installed? With this package installed there should be PPD for you.

Chris, are there really no working drivers for you at Avasys?

Till, had no idea what cups-driver-gutenprint was, just assumed it was there if it should be. When I looked it was not installed, obviously not loaded as part of 10.04? I've installed it now.

It didn't fix the problem at first but after removing the printer from the list and putting it back again the problem seems to be fixed. I printed a test page and a data file and it was fine.

Suggest treating it as fixed as far as I'm concerned unless I post again.

Felix, cups-driver-gutenprint is usally installed by default, but one can uninstall it and then updates will not reinstall the package.. So as long as your printer is working now your problem is solved.

Till, I'm sure I haven't uninstalled it, perhaps it is installed on a clean install of 10.04. I booted up 8.04 and then used the 10.04 cd to update to 10.04.

System/Admin/Synaptic to load cups-driver-gutenprint, if it's already there you have a different problem to me.

I have cups-driver-gutenprint installed, so mine is a different problem.

OK, a few things here:
1) AL-CX11 *NEVER* *EVER* worked out-of-the-box, for me. In each and every Ubuntu version starting from 7.04, I think, up to 10.04.

2) Yes, it requires the driver from avasys.jp (see http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=973233)

3) How did I get it to work? compiling the driver didn't work for me. I have the printer set up as socket://192.168.1.11:9100, but it simply won't print; printer doesn't even wake up from standby (the "microswitch"--actually a relay--referred to in the above posts). Also, permissions are OK, directory OK as well. Cups access_log and error_log give no information: all seems to be well, document printed as far as cups is concerned--but the printer doesn't even wake up.

So, I tried ipp://192.168.1.11:631. Interesting, now I see a *lot* of stuff in the logs: if I remember correctly (it was very late last night), ps2pdf or something is started, and it aborts complaining that libstdc++5 is not found.

Well, it turns out that in 10.04 you have no libstdc++5, only libstdc++6 (and that's what I installed, according to the Ubuntuforums instructions).

Even the dirty trick of symlinking ++5 to ++6 didn't work. So I downloaded it from http://packages.ubuntu.com/intrepid/libstdc++5 and installed it.

Finally, I deleted the printer and reinstalled it through CUPS, resulting in the usual socket://192.168.1.11:9100 connection.

Works. There is always the issue of CUPS complaining that pstoalcx11.sh is not installed, but we just ignore it.

Now I will try reproducing on two more laptops, one with 10.04, other 10.04 Netbook Remix. I will try posting some logs as well.

I'd like to chime in and say that Felix' fix doesn't work for me either. The package was installed.

The same problem occurs with my T24. It was working on Karmic but in Lucid the printer led starts blinking but the page is not printed out.

The Epson AcuLaser CX11 indeed needs a manufacturer-supplied proprietary driver. It does not work with any driver which comes with Ubuntu.

Everyone who has another printer, please report a separate new bug (if you have not done so already). Assign it to the "gutenprint" package and proceed as described on https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingPrintingProblems, especially supply an error_log as described in the "CUPS error_log" section. Before starting to do any investigations on your system to obtain the error_log or other information, please do a full system update as some printing-related bugs got fixed by recent updates.

Closing this bug as it was opened on a case of an unsupported printer.

Till, are you sure this is entirely a driver issue? It seems that there's a myriad of printers that suffer from the same symptoms, worked fine in 9.10 but refuse to do anything in 10.04 and have a fancy for blinking. Are they all using them same driver? If not, why is CX11 affected? The OP reported the same problem as everyone else here and almost a month later we're told to just open another ticket? This is critical functionality for a wide range of users with an insanely popular printer line, which strikes a pretty hard blow against Ubuntu as an office OS. The "high" priority label is very pretty and all, but it'd also be great if somebody actually did something about it. This is not a solitary case of somebody being unable to play minesweeper.

Nickpick, please note that this bug was opened for a not working AcuLaser CX11, all the other users have simply hijacked the bug for Epson inkjet printers, so that had to open a new bug in the first place.

My problem is also with the epson cx11n, I too downloaded & installed the drivers as stated previously, still nothing prints, mine is connected via usb and network. I get the error message that pstoalcx11.sh is not installed. It does exist in usr/lib/cups/filter. Followed all the ideas in other posts still nothing, reinstalled cups etc. Infact as of yesterday their was a new cups driver installed auto by updates.
Being new to linux means i have no idea how to follow bdot's idea (#64) of downloading the lbdtc library & installing. I get to downloaded then ./configure, after which I'm stuck.
any ideas anyone?

Most of the pre installed Linux software on new computers seems to be aimed at poor people.

Ubunu - love the idea - absolutely LOVE the idea, but with deep regret I can't use it... or I can risk spending another £400 on a decent colour laser all in one which >may< work in future Linux versions. Ever hopeful, but right now not happy :-(

If anyone ever finds anything that makes Ubuntu work with the CX11 >please< let me know.

I also own an Epson Aculaser CX11NF and encountered exactly the same problem. The network scan autodetected an Aculaser CX21 (which at least phonetically is very close). The IP settings have been derived correctly and even the fill level of the toner cartridges seems to be determined. I even get a warning, that I am running out of black toner. Every time I print I document, a message window pops up on my desktop, stating that the print order has been completed and an order number keeps counting up with each try. However, the printer has not yet spit out a single page of paper. I retried this with several releases of Ubuntu on different machines.
