Bug Description

Binary package hint: unity

ignore the first update to -proposed, I just saw the root cause: I wrongly merged back the lucid UNE ppa branch to the maverick one (I kept them on purpose because, of those two changed :/ Not sure when I wrongly pushed it…)

unity (0.2.46-0ubuntu5) maverick-proposed; urgency=low

  * Revert to maverick branch
(lucid une ppa branch wrongly merged in this one):
    + debian/control:
      - Readd netbook-launcher transitional package, this is needed for people
not having ubuntu-netbook installed on dist-upgrade to be
        transitionned to unity. (LP: #657838)
      - recommends ubuntu-netbook-default-settings and not
        ubuntu-netbook-unity-defaut-settings

Test case:
be on an UNE install with lucid, try to update to maverick with maverick-proposed pocket enabled.
On reboot, you should have unity installed in the UNE session.

-----------
After upgrading from 10.04 UNE to 10.10, Unity is not loaded. All that I can see is the wallpaper, no icons, no interface. I just can shut down by pressing power button.
I start Unity from the gdm-login via the session selector.

If I choose the desktop version, it works.
If I choose the Netbook 2D version, it works.

To solve my problem, I have started a desktop version and tape :
sudo apt-install unity
Now, it works really as it should.

I think this is the same as bug 644899 and bug 628828

This isn't really the same as the bug you suggested as those are driver issues.

It seems from you what you tell that unity wasn't install for you, even if you had 10.04 UNE. However, we made several update tests with different configuration and it was working.

Can you try apt-cache policy netbook-launcher, please?

There is something weird, you didn't get netbook-launcher on lucid? this is what transition you to unity on upgrade (and the package is still there in maverick, which as a dep on unity).

My english is too bad to understand what you say...

What do you mean by "you didn't get netbook-launcher on lucid ?"

I have installed Karmic UNR (9.04), then upgrade to 10.04 netbook version and then upgrade to 10.10...

right, but it seems that netbook-launcher has been removed during your dist-upgrade. Which is weird. Can you please paste your apt logs if you have some ? (normally in /var/log/apt/term.log).

If you can find the part relevant to the distr-upgrade, it would be awesome :)
Thanks a lot.

I think that's what you want.

PS: Is it possible to speak french here ?

Well, we try to avoid that in bug report as some other people might be affected by the same issue.

I don't see netbook-launcher anywhere in the log, which is weird and I really think you didn't get it installed before the upgrade.
If you want to speak French, you can ping me on IRC "didrocks" on freenode.

I have ever seen other people affected by this bug in ubuntu french forum...
http://forum.ubuntu-fr.org/viewtopic.php?id=421995 here for example.

When you talk about netbook-launcher, did you mean the netbook interface like in attachment ? (image taken from the official documentation)
In this case, it was installed since Karmic (UNR), and works as it should.

Didier Roche-Tolomelli (didrocks) wrote :

yeah, it was that interface. As we have a transitional package in maverick and a lot of tests were made on it, I don't see why you don't get it after upgrade and there is no trace in your log about it (I guess, seeing the revision, it's not the one from your dist-upgrade).

other people == one person as far as I can see and I got other people telling me that the transition worked perfectly :)
So let's see how it goes, and let's discuss on the forum.

ok, got it, you didn't have ubuntu-netbook installed on your system, hence the fact that unity isn't installed on update.

Fixing it.

It's possible that ubuntu-netbook wasn't installed, but I don't remember having uninstalled it.
Maybe it has never been installed.
Thank you.

Accepted unity into maverick-proposed, the package will build now and be available in a few hours. Please test and give feedback here. See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation how to enable and use -proposed. Thank you in advance!

Just tested 2 cases:

- upgrade maverick to latest version in -proposed -> ok
- installed lucid UNE, remove ubuntu-netbook package and dist-upgrade with -proposed enabled -> worked. Currently transitioned to unity

As discussed with Didier, we'll skip the 7 day period for this, since it causes broken upgrades, and doesn't change anything in unity itself.
