Please be a bit more specific with what you mean by "not workin", Jarek.

How do you start unity? From the gdm-login via the session selector or from a terminal-window from within you desktop-session?

Does it crash? Could you provide a backtrace with gdb in that case?

Does it render garbage on the screen or are only parts missing (e.g. textures)?

How did you install unity? Via source or via package-management (e.g. synaptic or software-center)

Just describe in more detail what/how it fails. Also please provide some information about your system (most importantly... gfx-card and driver-version used). Thanks in advance!

i installed it from normal installer - graphic mode
and it boot normally then i see login screen - so i am login in and normally i would see my desktop in Unity right? u know - icons, panels etc...but all i can see its just purple background and thats it..rest is no loadin or i cant see it...mouse - i can move it but right click does not respond also...i updated it today - but still its not workin, not showin anythin..its like x-server is not compatible...

my card is:

Display controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/GMS/GME, 943/940GML Express Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03)

i got same problem with Ubuntu 10.10 desktop edition - but after updates i can see whole desktop and its workin...with Unity not

Is that an nVidia chip??

I found this searching for issues relating to the nVidia cards (I have a GT240M) but IIRC, Intel Mobile 945s are not nVidia... I could be wrong though...

Interesting - you might have an nVidia *chipset* on the motherboard
(controlling USB etc) but you seem to have an Intel *graphics chip*.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better.
Please execute the following command, as it will automatically gather debugging information about your hardware, in a terminal:

apport-collect 628828

This will help us to find and resolve the problem. Bear in mind that you may need to install the python-launchpadlib package from the universe repository. Additionally, when prompted to give apport-collect permissions for Launchpad you will need to give it at least the ability to "Change Non-Private" data as it will be adding information to your bug report. Thanks in advance! When reporting bugs in the future please use apport, either via the appropriate application's "Help -> Report a Problem" menu or using 'ubuntu-bug' and the name of the package affected. You can learn more about this functionality at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReportingBugs.

I found this bug after an extensive search. I tried loading the ubuntu-10.10-beta-netbook-i386.iso on three machines. The ISO CD MD5 checksum is correct. When booting a live CD session, system boots to the background screen, but the mouse pointer and menus never appear. CTRL-ALT-F1 can get me to a terminal window. Hitting the power switch brings up the shutdown dialog box. Tried the live CD on three machines, all with some variant of Nvidia graphics cards. I performed an install on an HP TC1100 that went well, but I get the same results when the system boots - no menus or mouse pointer. All three of the systems I used for testing (two Dell desktops and the HP TC1100) are running 10.04 desktop with no issues.

Let me know if I can help by providing additional info and what you'd like to see.

Did you install on them the proprietary driver? You need it for running unity.

If it's the case, can you please run lspci and copy the result here?

Hi Didier,

I seem to remember the "Restricted Drivers in Use" window appearing.

Otherwise, is:

sudo apt-get install nvidia

sufficient to install all of the required drivers?

I'll work with it some more before uninstalling it, and I'll send you a copy of lspci results.

Cheers,
Randy

Didier,

I continued working on this, but put the system in an unusable state that would not boot. I ended up reloading 10.04 Desktop, as I needed to use the machine. I am hoping that things will go better next month if I do an upgrade.

Cheers,
Randy

I have this problem with my EEEPC 1000HD. The graphics card info from lspci:

00:02.1 Display controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 915GM/GMS/910GML Express Graphics Controller (rev 04)

I think this is probably the same as bug 644899

thanks for reporting this bug and commenting. In Ubuntu Natty Narwal unity have been re-written as a compiz plugin. and this should not be an isssue for you anymore. If you have the time you could test the Natty Alpha-3 ISO to see if the issue is still there. But its quite probable that this bug is automagically fixed on the switch to compiz. I am closing this bug since the development of the mutter version of unity have stopped and the current focus is only compiz unity.
