Sorry for the late reply. I am running in UNE session most of the time. Once
in a while I log into to gnome session for 5 min or so. One problem I
noticed is that once I log on to gnome session, the old style menu bar comes
along the unity bar. I have to remove the conf files to get it disappear.
This need to be somehow taken care of as well.

But I still have not found any reason to link the gnome-session log ons and
the crashes.

It is our duty to help ubuntu make better. We should be thanking you guys
left and right. I am a long time debian user, I still prefer to use debian,
but I am using ubuntu now so that I can try to do something to the
community.

sometimes results in the crash of terminal also.

I can reproduce the crasher too with GV under Mutter + Unity.
I can't reproduce the same crasher when running Mutter in a desktop session.

So there is something specific to Unity.

Looking at the backtrace, it sounds like an Xerror that is not properly trapped by Mutter, in the particular circumstances where the Unity plugin is loaded.

I can reproduce this using the appmenus File->Quit every time. It seems to happen because the window is sent a close event outside of Mutter knowing about it and that leaves mutter in a bad state. It ends up getting a bad window error and then calls abort () because of that (which might be a bit too harsh, in this case).

Closing gtk applications does not seem to cause the crash, only applications without support for global menu (firefox and thunderbird, in my case).

How to reproduce:

2. Close Firefox
3. If mutter does not crash, go to 1

After a few tries, mutter should crash.

The Mutter crashes were a lot more frequent before, so this bug has been at least partly fixed. The remaining trouble-makers seem to be programs like Firefox and Thunderbird that don't have their menus in the top panel. Right now the crashes do not happen every time, although they do seem to be more likely when there are multiple windows open.

It happens to me very frequently...I had to close my session and reopen it to get it fixed.

I have it for firefox as well as some Java programmes like Jin. It does not
happen every time, but is frequent enough.

I'd say that it seems especially tied to when mutter has no window to pass on focus to. And even more prominent if the last window to close is in full screen mode.

Adding to what Martin Zackrisson said, every time I close Firefox with no other window open mutter seems to go blank. If I have another window open this problem doesn't happen. If the other windows minimized first, the problem occurs. I can get mutter/unity back by pressing ctrl+alt+T and launching the terminal when I have the blank screen with only a mouse cursor. So it definitely seems related to widows,,,hop that is helpful. Let me know if I can be more clear.

The version of Unity in Ubuntu-10.10 is not being developed anymore. In Ubuntu-11.04 unity was a complete re-write. If you face this problem in Ubuntu-11.04 please report a new bug using the crash window.
