Bug Description

Binary package hint: wine1.2

As per summary: failed to install when upgrading to Ubuntu 10.04 (was previously using Ubuntu 9.10). I'm using 64-bit Ubuntu.

Bug in apt: please see comment 22 https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/apt/+bug/571999/comments/22

TEST CASE:
1. use karmic
2. install wine1.2
3. install wine to replace wine1.2
4. upgrade to lucid with update-manager
5. verify that it fails with a error when wine1.2 gets installed

6. use fresh karmic
7. install wine1.2 and then wine as above
8. run "update-manager --proposed"
9. verify that it works now

(due to the nature of the bug I think its ok to only test 6-9 as the bug itself is sufficiently reproduced).

So it looks to me like this upgrade was done off of a stale mirror. I can't replicate this with the final package.

Just a blind guess, but would that mean that during an upgrade dpkg keep the older or the highest version of the conflicting package ?

Scott Ritchie (scottritchie) wrote :

Ah hah, that must be it. I suspected dpkg was getting the wrong conflicts information somewhere, and that must be it.

Also I'll note that there is no way to have both wine and wine1.2 installed in Karmic, so the modified title is wrong.

Something tells me people were using wine old self-hosted ppa or switched to the daily ppa. Cause I remember I had this issue when I upgraded to lucid during development. But I knew that I was using "upstream" self-hosted packages instead of karmic's wine.

Scott Ritchie (scottritchie) wrote :

That was my first impression too, but the packages in the log are the karmic version. Apport wouldn't have let the bug report through if they weren't official ubuntu packages anyway.

Also, the Karmic packages in the PPA are higher numbered than the ones available in Lucid, so they wouldn't upgrade at all (and thus not conflict)

Some testing confirms how to reproduce this bug, and that it's actually an issue with apt:

On 9.10:

Install wine1.2 package. Then Install wine package. Apt will remove Wine1.2 (since they conflict) but leave the wine1.2 deb in the cache.

Upgrade to 10.04. This upgrades wine to the dummy package, which depends on wine1.2. Apt then tries to install the Karmic wine1.2 from the cache, which still conflicts with wine, and it then panics and gives up. Apt should instead first try to upgrade wine1.2 to the lucid wine1.2, which doesn't conflict with the new wine.

We can probably work around this by releasing an SRU for Lucid wine1.2 that has the wine dummy package depend on a wine1.2 newer than the one in Karmic.

That's an error message from dpkg rather than apt.

I suspect the bug has been fixed in the meantime, as it hasn't been reported with later versions of dpkg.
