Bug Description

Ubuntu Precise Desktop 20120416

On first boot after an installation with encrypted home a notification is displayed to record user's passphrase. In non-english langugage the dialog box is translated but not the message itself.

The message is
 """
Record your encryption passphrase

To encrypt your home directory or "Private" folder, a strong passphrase has been automatically generated. Usually your directory is unlocked with your user password, but if you ever need to manually recover this directory, you will need this passphrase. Please print or write it down and store it in a safe location.
If you click "Run this action now", enter your login password at the "Passphrase" prompt and you can display your randomly generated passphrase.
Otherwise, you will need to run "ecryptfs-unwrap-passphrase" from the command line to retrieve and record your generated passphrase.
"""

See bug 358283 for the implementation details.

This seems as if bug 358283 was never fixed, or a regression.

The original bug's comments show how i18n should work for this notification.

With my branch attached to this bug, the dialogue is marked as translatable and a new .pot will be generated during build as usual.

In my test, the title "Record your encryption passphrase" is shown as translated, but still no luck with the description. Strange...

I don't know why the description is still untranslated. So un-assigning myself.

Oh wait, removing line breaks on the description, i.e. integrating multi-paragraphs into one, works fine.

Can someone confirm this? If so, what package should I file the bug for?

Hi Nobuto

Thanks for your work on this bug. You are right, if the description is in many lines, then it cannot start in the same line as the Description: string. This is documented here:

http://www.debian.org/doc/debian-policy/ch-controlfields.html#s-f-Description

intltool works consistently with this documentation, that's why it did not appeared translated for you first. With the change in the paste the localization should work fine, so please commit that into the proposed branch too.
I have learned about this behavior in bug #514401.
update-notifier displays the content of these .note files, and it tolerates multiple line long Description fields. You can report this if you want, but I think we could just live with this bug, as it normally does not affect anything, until we want to start localizing the strings.

Hi Gabor,

thanks for your quick response.
You're describing an issue with or without line break just after the "Description:" string, right?
Indeed I suffered the issue when working on my branch.

I'm sorry for my insufficient explanation, my current issue in #6 is with or without a single dot after a single space (will be recognized as a line break).

This combination of the two below is not shown as translated:
http://paste.ubuntu.com/1325199/
http://paste.ubuntu.com/1325201/

But another combination (without linebreak) works:
http://paste.ubuntu.com/1325198/
http://paste.ubuntu.com/1325196/

Did you heard something like this before?

(21時26分18秒) nobuto: I worked on it as branch, http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~nobuto/ubuntu/raring/ecryptfs-utils/record-passphrase-dialogue-translatable/revision/88 and now it loads translation of the title of the dialogue. but it does not load translations of the description.
(21時27分02秒) nobuto: but removing line break of the description makes loading the translation.
(21時27分32秒) nobuto: Is it OK just removing line break to fix this bug on the short-term basis?
(21時29分01秒) dpm: let me have a look...
(21時45分33秒) dpm: nobuto, I think it should be fine to remove the line break, but I'd double-check with kelemengabor, as he's got more experience in internationalizing such Debian files. Or another good place to ask might be on the #debian-i18n channel on the OFTC network
(21時50分30秒) nobuto: dpm: thanks. I'm not so sure, but update-notifier seems handling translations by itself. http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-branches/ubuntu/raring/update-notifier/raring/view/head:/src/hooks.c#L194
(21時51分22秒) kelemengabor: dpm: nobuto: I think it is okay. the problem is that update-notifier does not entirely work according to the spec, while intltool does. but we have only a few such notes, so fixing those could be an easier way.
(21時52分39秒) dpm: nobuto, kelemengabor, it might be worth filing a bug against update-notifier specifying the way it should work, and as a workaround until it's fixed, then remove the line breaks of the description
(21時54分52秒) nobuto: dpm: kelemengabor: OK. I will report it as a bug of update-notifier and see how it works for a week. Until then it's not fixed, I will make a merge propossal to ecryptfs-utils with removing the line breaks.
