Mplayer hangs while attempting to reproduce a smb:/ file

example:

mplayer -wid 85983469 -slave -vo xv,sdl,x11 -ao alsa,oss,sdl,arts -framedrop -contrast 0 -brightness 0 -hue 0 -saturation 0 -cache 128 'smb://hostname/filename.avi' -identify

Doesn't give any output. (the command was automatically generated by KMplayer)

Mplayer and VLC for that matter, won't play over a smb share in Edgy or Feisty. The only way I could ever get them working was to do a nfs share. Totem will play over smb, but often with reduced performance (video stumbling, etc.)

This seems to work with 1.0rc2, which I'm currently packaging. I'll have test packages in a few hours.
