Bug Description

The topic says it all: I'm unable to install 10.04 on a HP 460c G6 blade unless I use the release kernel. The newer ones that I had or was able to get (2.6.32-25.44, 2.6.32-24.38) were buggy and gave me that error:

Oct 27 07:43:20 kernel: [ 1474.884989] cciss: Unknown symbol compat_alloc_user_space

which means that the installation fails with "no root file system defined" -error, and this is a regression.

This is weird.. I checked which image was used when I installed an identical machine* in August, and it was the one based on 2.6.32-24.38.. So, is this due to the security changes that removed compat_alloc_user_space in September, meaning that there needs to be an installer image refresh against the latest kernel in archive?

* only the blade chassis is different, which means more virtual NIC's in this one

Marking as invalid for natty - this seems to be lucid-only.

I've rebuilt d-i against the latest -25 image, and cciss works with it. So there was an ABI break but no bump.

Accepted debian-installer into lucid-proposed, the package will build now and be available in a few hours. Please test and give feedback here. See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation how to enable and use -proposed. Thank you in advance!

I just had the same problem on a BL460 G6 and downloaded the latest proposed kernel and initrd and it detected the disks just fine using the cciss driver.

This bug was fixed in the package debian-installer - 20081029ubuntu102.5

---------------
debian-installer (20081029ubuntu102.5) lucid-proposed; urgency=low

  * Rebuild against current 2.6.32-25 kernels; there seems to have been a
hidden ABI change that broke installer images (LP: #667187).

closing the kernel task, since the abi has since been bumped though not because of this change.
