Bug Description

Binary package hint: casper

We currently disable apport on stable releases for various reasons: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Apport#How%20to%20enable%20apport

However, casper re-enables it on the live system, mainly to be able to report installer crashes. However, we should only limit that to installer failures, since reporting general desktop-ish crashes is moot. Packages are almost guaranteed to be out of date, which causes confusion and frustration.

One practical possibility would be to only allow Python crashes, no coredump ones.

Package installation failures would be useful too.

Package installation failures are already being reported independently of /etc/default/apport (which is really a bug, though).

For casper we need to modify the hook to whitelist /usr/lib/ubiquity/bin/ubiquity if apport is disabled by default.

      programs should be reported.

This bug was fixed in the package casper - 1.300

casper (1.300) precise; urgency=low

  * 33enable_apport_crashes: If enabling apport (i. e. on a released Ubuntu
    versions), only report crashes for Ubiquity. Do not report general
    desktop-ish crashes, for the same reasons why we disable them for
    Ubuntu releases after installation. (LP: #593606)
