I have started to notice a pattern. It always happens if I reboot. And only sometimes if I first halt then turn on the computer.

I also have this problem.

I've got a Dell Dimension E521 with ATI X1200 card with Ubuntu Lucid Lynx 32 bits.
I'm using the free driver "Radeon" by default.

After a few modifications with startupmanager GUI, I have now a black screen instead of white, but the problem remains the same.

It happens about once every four times.

How about Lucid?

I still have this problem on Lucid 2.6.32-24 i386.

Nizar, are you able to test with the Ubuntu 10.10 "Maverick Meerkat" beta Live CD? If you can confirm fdn's observation that it fixes this bug, we can then work on an SRU for Lucid. This should be possible since the fix seems to be upstream in kernel 2.6.33.7 and Lucid's drm is back-ported from 2.6.33.

Nizar, the drm from 2.6.33.7 seems to be included in the linux 2.6.32-25.43 package currently available in Lucid-proposed, as per https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/2.6.32-25.43

The patch I mentioned in comment #10 is among those listed at https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/615548

Can you add Lucid-proposed then update and tell us what happens?

@madbiologist : I'm actually using Maverick beta updated and installed from a Lucid installation. Since the update the problem of the white screen has disappeared. The current kernel version is :
