@madbiologist : I'm actually using Maverick beta updated and installed from a Lucid installation. Since the update the problem of the white screen has disappeared. The current kernel version is :
~$ uname -a
Linux dell 2.6.35-21-generic #31-Ubuntu SMP Mon Sep 13 23:14:37 UTC 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux
