seems the problem is at pychess:37
from pychess.System.Log import log
log.debug("Started\n")

commenting out log.debug("Started\n") allows pychess to start if someone qualified in python can take a look

looks like there may be a few gtk2.19 problems too, like

This is the patch for this bug under 10.04, the maintainer has been set to ubuntu developers, upstream might not go for that, this is my first bug, so I wasn't if I should have left it or not.

yes, commenting out log.debug is an indication of the problem area, not a fix! it needs looked at by someone that knows python

as i've mentioned, there may be gtk 2.19 problems too, sadly my python knowledge is too weak to sort any of these bugs out
