Bug Description

Binary package hint: openoffice.org

This is a bizarre one and is causing major headaches for me. I have a file that is perfect, I send it to another machine, open it up, and the damn margins are off and other things are off. My girlfriend is in law school so EVERYTHING has to be perfect otherwise she gets marked off points. We decided to submit the PDF's, as well as the .doc so that you can see what we're seeing, this is a major headache....

Just to rephrase, I send her a doc, she sees it differently, we both made PDF's, original is mine, other computer is hers.

Some issues
Number of pages (yeah number of pages are off)

Page 8 of copy is blank, no blank pages in original

Margins on page 3 are different, more specifically the 4. on the bottom is off

That's just the beginning, basically the copy she was seeing in open office was worthless and she couldn't turn it in, major major headache

[This is an automatic notification.]

This bug was reported against an earlier version of Ubuntu, can you test if it still occurs on Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (Lucid Lynx)?

Please note we also provide technical support for older versions of Ubuntu, but not in the bug tracker. Instead, to raise the issue through normal support channels, please see:

    http://www.ubuntu.com/support

If you are the original reporter and can still reproduce the issue on Lucid, please run the following command to refresh the report:

  apport-collect 519669

Bear in mind that you may need to install the python-launchpadlib package from the universe repository. Additionally, when prompted to give apport-collect permissions for Launchpad you will need to give it at least the ability to "Change Non-Private" data as it will be adding information to your bug report.

If you are not the original reporter, please file a new bug report, so we can work with you as the original reporter instead (you can reference bug 519669 in your report if you think it may be related):

  ubuntu-bug openoffice.org

If by chance you can no longer reproduce the issue on Lucid or if you feel it is no longer relevant, please mark the bug report 'Fix Released' or 'Invalid' as appropriate, at the following URL:

  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/519669

Now the original looks bad on mine as well -- I'm upgraded to Lucid so I'm not really sure how to test it at this point

I don't think there really as any bug here to be fixed, unless there is a better font that should be substituted on your system. It appears the problem with these two documents is due to the fonts you have on your systems.

The original document was written in 'Courier New' but you do not have it installed so instead of just not rendering it on your screen at all OOo had to substitute the fonts with as close as was available.

Your PDF has the following fonts embedded:

NimbusMonL-Bold
NimbusMonL-Regu
NimbusRomNo9L-Regu
NimbusMonL-ReguObli
DejaVuSans-Bold

Her PDF has the following fonts embedded:

CourierNewPS-BoldMT
CourierNewPSMT
LiberationSerif
CourierNewPS-ItalicMT

My system has the same fonts as her system so Original.doc ends up looking the same as her PDF on my system.

On Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (Lucid) running off CD it uses these fonts for the PDF, and looks at least very similar to her and my pdf's:

LiberationMono-Bold
LiberationMono
LiberationSerif
LiberationMono-Italic
DejaVuSans-Bold

It may have been in the past that /etc/fonts had bad mappings for Courier New to use Nimbus Mono L instead of Liberation Mono or maybe the Liberation fonts weren't installed by default which could cause it to map as follows (I think) Courier New -> Courier -> Nimbus Mono L

Oh and also note the way it looks on systems other than your own is also the way it looks in Office 2010, I just verified it, which is most likely correct being as its a doc file to begin with. :-)

Thank you much, I feel like an idiot for not checking that. I don't know why she would have courier new and I wouldn't though....that's a strange one but I'll look into it myself. Thanks again for explaining it and not pointing out that I should have noticed it to begin with...

I'm still having formatting issues between MS Office and OOo, should I start a new report or post my issues here? I'll look into the font issue closer

Have you guys seen that there are major issues with the new MS Office margins/footers and OOo system?

Jmadero,

If you have the time and patience to do it, it would be helpful if you would use the official upstream openoffice.org packages and report bugs directly to their bug tracker for file compatibility issues. That would take the middle man out of the equation and insure the bugs get fixed as quickly as possible. :-) I'm pretty sure that there are very many compatibility issues still and they probably wouldn't mind simple test case files for the various issues if they aren't already filed in their bugtracker. If you happen to have a windows machine just using the official OOo on that machine, so you don't lose the integration patches on Ubuntu, would also be suitable to file bug reports on the upstream bugtracker. They don't want bugs filed on their bugtracker using our Ubuntu packages though since we make changes and can sometimes cause the problems with our own packaging.
