This appears to be Debian bug #544414 - see http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=544414 - and the same fix applies (fixed in Debian 0.13.1-11) .

Could you please test the package in this PPA:

If it fixes the problem for you, I'll start the SRU procedures.

SRU Request:

This is an SRU request to fix two aide issues in Karmic:
- Daily aide cron job fails because of unbound variables (this bug report)
- Daily aide cron job fails because of special characters in device pathnames (bug #456710)

Impact:
- First bug renders aide non-functional on Karmic. This is a regression from previous releases.
- Second bug renders aide non-functional on Karmic on systems that have certain special characters in their device names.

Both issues are fixed in the development release.

A debdiff of the changes required to fix these issues is attached, and the fixes are self-explanatory.

How to reproduce:
- install aide (apt-get install aide)
- create initial database (aideinit)
- run daily cron script (/etc/cron.daily/aide)

This bug was fixed in the package aide - 0.13.1-10ubuntu5.1

---------------
aide (0.13.1-10ubuntu5.1) karmic-proposed; urgency=low

  * debian/cron.daily/aide: protect $LOGHEAD and $MAILHEAD so the cron
    script doesn't abort. (LP: #456679)
  * debian/aide.conf.d/70_aide_dev: escape some more special chars in
    filenames. (LP: #456710)
