Is it a default configuration ?

Please follow the steps described in the message above and report if it helps.

Yes it is a default config; I figured that something went wrong since the
installer prompts for you to enter the network interface to listen on.

I suppose the bug is that it violated my expectations by prompting for some
information and not the rest that it needs to complete the installation.

I was able to get a good install. The problem was using full version name
2.7.0-14 instead of 2.7.

Thanks for the reply.

The problem appears to be caused by snort connecting to mysql as root
and does not offer user intervention, failing instead.

I don't clue regard this error in jaunty so i decide to compile the latest stable snort's (anyway i thing that's the best solution for security sw) version and last but not least i also pachetize snort. I attach the binary here (I don't what's the procedure for acceptance by Ubuntu repos) meantime i test it. For now work fine.

Attached is a debdiff which resolves this issue, by not attempting to start snort(-mysql) if the database (mysql/pgsql) isn't yet configured.

I'm going to try and get this into Debian, rather than stray from Debian on this issue - as snort is traditionally maintained wholly in Debian.
