Bug Description

Binary package hint: compiz

Had gnome-terminal open, and two nautilus windows. Hit Ctrl-Alt-F1 to switch to console, it was black, so Ctrl-Alt-F7 to get back to X. It was black also, hit Ctrl-Alt-Backspace to restart X. Crash occurred directly after X restarted.

Saw other bug report, but noticed it was marked incomplete. I have debug symbols installed for compiz and gang, so apport should provide good information.

I can confirm this. In my case I had a white screen after rebooting after an update.

Updating the proprietary drivers fixed the problem for me though.

I'm using an ATI x1900xt video card.

I can confirm this as well. I was having sound issues so pressed ctrl-alt-backspace and logged in again. Upon login the screen was blank with the background color and a lighter orange box in the upper left. I am on Hardy Beta. Can get more info if needed.

Now, I dont worry about it, because I have installed Debian. Its better
and faster than Ubuntu. Try this.....

Hi,

[this comment has been falsely reported in bug #205536 too, i screwed up myself when finding the right one, sorry… perhaps these bugs could be duplicates ?]

confirmed on latest Intrepid, AMD64 and Intel GMA X4500MHD (full HW info @ http://deep-ocean.net/files/sony/ ). This crash happens at EVERY login.
  * I run XFCE
  * with xfwm4 package uninstalled
  * and a symlink from /usr/bin/compiz to /usr/bin/xfwm
At login, session starts normally, then compiz crashes. If I open a terminal and type "compiz --replace", compiz is stable until next reboot : If I just logout then login, compiz works flawlessly.
It could be because I've got an xrandr call in my session scripts, because of bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xbacklight/+bug/176888

→ when my session is GNOME, compiz works flawlessly and never crashes. It's been crashing at login 100% of the time only since I use Xfce, but I can't seem to find the reason of the crash.
