Bug Description

[ SRU Justification ]
In the Xenial cycle, mplayer2 was dropped and mplayer reintroduced. On upgrade from wily to xenial (I didn't notice until yakkety), mplayer2 is left installed, rather than the sidegrade being done, leaving people with unsupported software installed. This should be resolved with a transitional package for upgrades.

[ Test Case ]
Ensure that a wily->xenial upgrade with mplayer2 installed gets us mplayer instead and makes mplayer2 autoremovable via apt.

[ Regression Potential ]
mplayer+ffmpeg is generally less broken than mplayer2+libav was, so there's little chance of regression, and moving people to software that might actually get future uploads and fixes seems sane.

Hello Adam, or anyone else affected,

Accepted mplayer into xenial-proposed. The package will build now and be available at https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/mplayer/2:1.2.1-1ubuntu1 in a few hours, and then in the -proposed repository.

Please help us by testing this new package. See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation how to enable and use -proposed. Your feedback will aid us getting this update out to other Ubuntu users.

If this package fixes the bug for you, please add a comment to this bug, mentioning the version of the package you tested, and change the tag from verification-needed to verification-done. If it does not fix the bug for you, please add a comment stating that, and change the tag to verification-failed. In either case, details of your testing will help us make a better decision.

Further information regarding the verification process can be found at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/QATeam/PerformingSRUVerification . Thank you in advance!

No correspondingly updated mplayer-dbg package has been released. Therefore, after upgrading to mplayer-2:1.2.1-1ubuntu1, mplayer-dbg (which obviously depends on an identical version of mplayer) can no longer be installed.

Workaround: downgrade to mplayer-2:1.2.1

Tested upgrades from both trusty and wily, and mplayer2 gets upgraded to mplayer correctly in both cases.

The verification of the Stable Release Update for mplayer has completed successfully and the package has now been released to -updates. Subsequently, the Ubuntu Stable Release Updates Team is being unsubscribed and will not receive messages about this bug report. In the event that you encounter a regression using the package from -updates please report a new bug using ubuntu-bug and tag the bug report regression-update so we can easily find any regressions.

(As for Paul's assertion about a mismatch with mplayer-dbg, the dbg package is built and published for all architectures, so there must have been a bit of driver error there)

Correct, it turns out I upgraded mplayer while proposed was enabled, then attempted to install mplayer-dbg at a later time with proposed disabled.

Thanks for looking into that.
