mpv 0.38.0+git20240420 builds (requires other PPAs) for Xenial & newer.

Update (22 Nov 2023): New builds with latest libplacebo are now available.

Update (8 Sep 2023): No new mpv builds from git source will be done for a while due an upstream switch to requiring libplacebo >= 6 for the gpu-next video output feature (generally faster than standard gpu output). Current VLC 3.0.x does not support libplacebo >= 6 (a patch to VLC is required to even support libplacebo >= 5). See https://github.com/mpv-player/mpv/pull/11952 for more discussion about all of these factors relating to libplacebo v5.x vs v6.x (and VLC vs mpv).

*** Install ***

These are "cutting edge" builds of mpv with newer Wayland & protocols to provide additional features for Wayland users. Additional PPAs are needed for these builds, including the new private PPA (ppa:savoury1/ffmpeg). Any who have donated can contact me to request private PPA access. Once access to the private PPA is given then do the following steps for installation:

  sudo add-apt-repository ppa:savoury1/display
  sudo add-apt-repository ppa:savoury1/ffmpeg4
  sudo add-apt-repository ppa:savoury1/ffmpeg6
  sudo add-apt-repository ppa:savoury1/mpv
  sudo apt-get update
  sudo apt-get install libmpv2 mpv

The final two commands should be run only AFTER the private PPA is added!

These builds are done with the following PPAs:
