I booted my laptop, did a Control-Alt-F1 and closed the lid. This resulted in a kernel panic. Attached you'll find the logfiles/screenshots.

I also tried with a 2.6.24-16 kernel, which resulted in a kernel panic as well.

I also tried to boot with a Ubuntu 7.10 live CD. This runs kernel 2.6.22-14 (Ubuntu 2.6.22-14.46). Closing the lid did not result in "hanging" laptop (!).
