I've just tried to reproduce this issue on "Linux workmate 2.6.27-7-generic #1 SMP". There is still a kernel panic when I close the lid (see attached screenshot).
Because I noticed the error could be SMP-related, I disabled one of the CPU's (sudo sh -c 'echo 0 > /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu1/online') and closed the lid again. No kernel panic this time!
