Same problem here. My /etc/network/interfaces looks like this:

iface lo inet loopback

iface ath0 inet static
# mtu 1492
address 192.168.1.29
netmask 255.255.255.0
network 192.168.1.0
broadcast 192.168.1.255
gateway 192.168.1.1
wpa-driver madwifi
wpa-ssid dd-wrt
wpa-bssid 00:14:BF:C9:2B:70
wpa-key-mgmt WPA-PSK
wpa-psk (hidden)
auto lo

auto ath0

The network is not initially starting. Just after "sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart" it works flawlessly.

My kernel: 2.6.15-23-amd64-generic
wpasupplicant: 0.4.8-3ubuntu1
