I also tested with:
sudo vmbuilder kvm ubuntu --suite lucid --flavour virtual --arch i386 -o --libvirt qemu:///system --raw /dev/loop1p1

after using fdisk on /dev/loop0 and using kpartx -av /tmp/foo.img.
