It would be fine to have user-level security -- if samba uses PAM, and users of a particular group (which desktop users are members of by default) are automatically included as samba users.

Then, you try to connect to your machine, and it asks for a password. You give the password. That gives you access to the share.

This wouldn't require new software, it could be done through configuring the software that's already there. While not as good as giving secure defaults and the freedom to be stupid if they like, it's still decent.

Also, it would be nice, at some point in time, to have some sort of limited-access share (Not homedir, not below homedir unless in 'media', + warnings on granting write access).
