Thanks embecka, your conf file fix worked for me.

The messages stopped cold after writing the new conf file and restarting rsyslog (they had been streaming in at the usual alarming rate just prior to the fix). Just to be sure, I ran a disk scan of a 40 GB partition that took about 5 minutes. So far, so good.
