This bug was fixed in the package python2.6 - 2.6.1-1ubuntu5.1

  * revert to 2.6.1-1ubuntu4 because the -1ubuntu5 upload breaks
    the entire pygtk and makes important apps like update-manager
    no longer start (LP: #349467)
