A novel solution. I trust the repeated loading of ~/.asoundrc doesn't have any observable side-effects.

I note that this fix only allows for an override in ~/.asoundrc - making one in /etc/asound.conf still won't take effect. The obvious extension of the fix is to include /etc/asound.conf too in the repeated loading.
