I am having the same problem with my setup:
MSI P6N SLI Motherboard
Pentium Core 2 Duo E6850 @ 3.00GHz
2xGeForce 9600 GT cards (SLI)

Machine works fine with only one card, but hard locks at boot up with both cards in. The default (nouvea) driver works fine with both cards.
