I had the same problem on a Dell Studio 17/1749. I fixed it by generating this file and rebooting:
i5:/etc/modprobe.d$ cat dellstudio.conf options snd-hda-intel model=dell-m6 # or dell-m6-amic, dell-m6-dmic, dell-eq

sound is not very loud but for now it is good enough for me.
