I tried installing the generic 2.6.27-19 mainline kernel as provided by the kernel team (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds - even I can install a .deb!). Brightness changes work like a charm. I wish a developer would chime in and let us know if/when we'll get a newer kernel, since this regression seems to have been fixed upstream.
