I have an R61i, and adding "options thinkpad_acpi brightness_enable=1" to /etc/modprobe.d/options solved my problem. What confuses me is that my problem showed up later than the other posters. Is there a way to auto-detect when this option is necessary? My pre-fix system is described in greater detail in the duplicate bug 323475.
