I have put Pavol's patch in a PPA here: https://launchpad.net/~brian-rogers/+archive/power

Just run
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:brian-rogers/power

And then update your system to try it out. It also contains a patch to provide battery life estimates on laptops that don't normally get them.
