And found the reason: It's the pcspkr module.
Unloading it solves the hangs on the intrepid kernel. Not sure if it's the same issue as with the Hardy kernel, but
the symptoms are very similar.
Would be good to know what's the reason though.

There's also a related bug #146151 .
