Unfortunately, the rt2x00 module seems pretty much unmaintained and is not reported to support the Linux Wireless Extensions yet. I found some discussion about this back in July: http://mail.gnome.org/archives/networkmanager-list/2006-July/msg00054.html
Sadly, nothing seems to have happened with it since.
If at least Network Manager worked with WEP and without any security that would at least be something.
