One other piece of information - well, two. First, this machine is a myth backend and mythfilldatabase also crashed at some point and wanted to send a bug report on the same reboot - so did compiz.real.
Second, it just occurred to me that I had set vm.swappiness to 10 right before the upgrade to Intrepid - might not be a good idea on this machine. I removed the entry from sysctl.conf and will keep an eye on the machine.
