I have now booted a few times successfully into kernel 2.6.28-13-generic #45-Ubuntu, but a few minutes ago I had the same problem (lockup at boot at the gdm prompt). So the problem is still there (I'm constantly updating my system). Right now working again with 2.6.27-11.
ojo@hermes:~$ grep "hal" /var/log/Xorg.0.log <-- current working configuration

ojo@hermes:~$ grep "hal" /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old <-- last boot
