gnome-terminal has this key sequence bound to switch gnome-terminal tabs.
It's an easy fix, just:
-- right click for a context menu, then "Show Menubar"
-- select "Edit"->"Keyboard Shortcuts"
-- remap any sequences that you need passed to terminal apps ( backspace disables a shortcut )
-- hide the menubar again
happy vim tabs again!
This worked for me on hardy with both the gnome-terminal-2.22.1-0ubuntu2 binary package and the head of the gnome-terminal subversion repository from http://svn.gnome.org/svn/gnome-terminal/trunk
