For the sake of searching: this also affects 8.10 with -proposed; Brother HL-2030, HL-2040 printers.

* Reinstalled the update to test (4.0.0-0ubuntu0.1)
* Reapplied the default settings as described above, printing on that driver now works.
* PPD of the -debug copy is attached.
