In the profile that I attached, I had commented out that rule and still had freezes (on karmic):
  #deny /usr/lib/firefox-3.*/update.test w,
  #deny /usr/lib/mozilla/extensions/**/ w,
  #deny /usr/lib/xulrunner-addons/extensions/**/ w,
  #deny /usr/share/mozilla/extensions/**/ w,

Note that http://www.java.com/de/download/help/testvm.xml would sometimes work for me, even with the deny rule.
