I can report the same problem (error message: "Cannot allocate memory") when using the method outlined in
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/EncryptedPrivateDirectory

# Move the application's data directory (e.g. ~/.mozilla or ~/.evolution) into your ~/Private directory

 mv ~/.evolution ~/Private
