Sorry, I was on a box where I tested Ghostscript 8.64.

Are you sure that you did the change in

/usr/share/ghostscript/8.63/lib/gs_statd.ps

I found the place which I described in my last comment only in

/usr/share/ghostscript/8.63/lib/gs_setpd.ps

on my Intrepid box with Ghostscript 8.63.
