Then I don't think I actually solved it, just slowed it down enough so it didn't fail.

This morning the strace I tried also looked good. I don't think it's the debug/warning logging to syslog.

Maybe it is the calls to the debug-functions ? I did already change them from warning to debug, so it would not try to log anything through syslog.
