I was successfully able to perform an upgrade directly from kubuntu 8.04 (with additional kde3 packages installed) to karmic with the adept packages from hardy-proposed, 2.1.3ubuntu25.2. (I did have one issue in that X would no longer start up, but that issue is specific to virtualbox and failsafe X no longer being present in karmic -- removing /etc/X11/xorg.conf completely caused X to start working again).
I also verified that with the adept packages installed, adept continued to update, install, and remove packages from the 8.04 installation, and did not see any sign of regression. Marking verification-done.
