Ah, THIS time, /var/log/messages and dmesg have the following messages:

psmouse.c: GlidePoint at isa0060/serio1/input0 lost synchronization, throwing 3 bytes away.
psmouse.c: resync failed, issuing reconnect request

This may be a different failure than what I've seen before, as /var/log/messages.* files don't have other occurrences of the above text.
