Just for the archives (we already talked about that over IRC):
you need to run xev through the new display provided by xmond, i.e. DISPLAY=localhost:4 xev

Some handy shortcuts we figured out today:
Alt+F7 is GNOME's default shortcut for move window.
Alt+F10 for maximise window.
Do you have a multi-monitor setup too? That seems to be Robert's issue. If you do, try moving the xev window around between the monitors and mouse functionality comes back at some point. Robert will post more detailed information on that soon.
