I think there is something to this.

When I look at the italicised f in the context of a word it aften seems
like the bottom part curves *forward* slightly. I think that's because
the eye is expecting it to curve *backward* at the bottom below the
baseline, like a real Olde English f, but it's just straight.

I think it's worth asking for a variation to be mocked up, though it's
very late in the game on this front. DM?
