I have no luck with mp3 files either. Sometimes it reports an error (similar to the above), but most often when trying to play it just gets stuck as soon as the mp3 file is supposed to start playing.

For example:
- new project
- add audio file (point to an mp3 track, watch it import)
- drag the track slightly to the right (say 1 second on the timeline)
- press play. The timeline moves across until it hits the start of the mp3 file, then it just stalls. It will stay there until I hit the 'Stop' button. I never get any sound from the mp3 file.

The mp3 files of course play fine in any regular gstreamer based music player.
