Bug Description

I am using an Acer Aspire 5734z-4512. The report will show that I'm using a previous kernel version. I upgraded from 10.10 to 11.04...and right before that ubuntu logo came up, BOOM, there goes my backlight...tried a few things with the flashlight...but to no avail...actually installed the package gnome in synaptics by flashlight, thinking maybe if I get my old environment back, it'd work...well, so I logged out, and nothing, restarted and used previous kernel version and it worked... My grub screen looked totally different though...had a sun and everything, so I think one of those 88 packages that came with the gnome package installed some stuff with it. I'll be trying with the regular new kernel to see if it works because of installing that package....but I doubt it. I wouldn't mind some sort of fix for this...it was kinda disappointing...

Yeah, I removed those 88 packages after identifying them in synaptics....was fun copying and pasting into gedit...now called texteditor...

That's what it installed with the package gnome. After removing and testing, it made no difference. The only difference I see if that the previous kernel I got from 10.10 is working and the newer one is not....and my brightness control shows an indicator, but doesn't do anything... I don't have to report that as a separate issue, do I?

Look at bug 518002 for a workaround. And please also test whether it is (half) fixed with the newest kernel from http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/daily/current/ .

There are two issues here:
the brightness controls do not actually work
the initial brightness with some kerenels is zero

The initial brightness is not zero anymore on 5635Z, might be the case for you, too.

I appreciate the try with the kernel, but I don't do 386... I'll try looking at that bug for more information. My brightness control seems to put an indicator on my screen, but it doesn't function....

I'm trying with bug 518002. If I still lose backlight alltogether, I can always remote into my own machine from my ipod touch...which is a strange way to use the laptop....but I get usability. LOL

Yeah, that one was a no go...doesn't seem to make a difference on the kernel I am loading on, though I'm now removing that ppa and making sure I put everything back. LOL I just tested to see if there was any change to the backlight with the keys, and no there isn't...bug 518002 was ineffective...same place.

You're not going to believe this, but I got the kernel that gives me backlight from Maverick... I'm Natty now, and I don't have the source for the older kernel, or lack that ability to make VirtualBox happy by installing it... I remoted into my computer, and noticed that virtualbox works fine with the current kernel though... I'm going to have to carry on testing with virtual images regardless...so for now, I've gotta use my computer from my ipod touch... LOL This is quite interesting... Unimaginable this would be something that would affect me also because of this backlight issue... Either I continue with the ipod touch or wait until this is resolved...hmmm....

If anyone has an ideas of commands to run that'll give you a better idea of what's going on on my computer, lemme know, I'll run'em.

Found a workaround...

setpci -s 00:02.0 F4.B=00

I followed some instructions to make it automatically happen now...

Is there anyone I can talk to to get this bug worked out. I just read today about a guy using 12.04 who has the same problem. http://askubuntu.com/questions/135356/no-back-light-on-my-acer-aspire-5734z
I've been waiting all year for the chance to upgrade to 11.04, and now we're at 12.04 and I still can't take full advantage of a good Ubuntu OS. I'm still here using 10.10 Maverick. Anyone going to fix a confirmed bug?

So, having abandoned Ubuntu for nearly a year now, living in a purely Debian world...I'll check to see if the bug has been fixed after these couple years in 12.12

Bug isn't present in 12.10. It seems to have installed properly. Now to customize. Unity sucks, and integrated evolution is gonna go bye bye, along with that stupid indicator for volume mixed with the media player. Lots of phun to be had. I actually enjoy it. :D I'm happy.
