Here is a kernel with a DEBUG patch added (note this is not a fix, just a mechanism to confirm the root cause). Could you affected please test out these kernels (they should work on Maverick too) and report back here. The kernels are at the URL below:

    http://people.canonical.com/~apw/lp714719-natty/

After booting this, please do whatever you do to reproduce the freeze (if you can), then ssh into the box and collect the output of 'dmesg > dmesg.txt' and post it here. If you can't reproduce the crash within say a day or so, report that back here too.

If it happens that you haven't seen a freeze at all for a few days (esp. if you haven't seen it after doing a system update), then it may have been solved via a mystery kernel fix. In that case please note so here and the bug report can be set to 'Fix Released'.

Please test with the following kernel:

In this newer kernel code is a fix to enlarge unfenced alignments, which appears to be a problem specific to i915/i945. If that kernel makes this lockup bug go away, then we can investigate extracting and backporting it. If not and we can rule out that fix for this issue, upstream (Chris Wilson) will investigate further.

I was talking to the guys and gals over in #ubuntu-x yesterday about 730099, and it was suggested I try a non-ubuntu system and kernel.
So it reminded me, only a couple of weeks ago, I had debian sid, with a kernel from debian experimental on my eeepc. And didnt have any gpu lockup errors.
if this is of any help, i dont know, but it answers the question, they asked me to test.

It kooks like the software for intel 8286SG is getting worse. In 10.10 everything works fine and compiz works in 3D mode using e.g. the Cube. In 11.04 the hardware is not recognized as 3D and the system hangs or freezes almost constantly, sometimes the screen is also distorted. The problems occur in all Ubuntu login modes. The system is completely unusable.

I tried the kernel grub parameter "i915.modeset=0" and left my machine for a day, and got no lockup/hang, when i would normally get atleast get one.however it couldnt start gnome-shell and went straight into fallback mode.

i am also trying http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v2.6.39-rc3-natty/ as bryce suggested, and it booted without issue, some flickering however during boot, i have been using that kernel, without the above kernel parameter, and no gpu lockup/hang now after 4 hours. and gnome-shell started without issue.

within a few minutes of booing the above *.39-rc3 kernel, this morning, the gpu hang/lockup.
So the bug is not fixed in that new kernel, and seems to still remain.

This bug no longer affects me after upgrading to the kernel Bryce suggested. Occasionally a GPU lockup occurs, but the error code is different, indicating it is a different problem. Regardless, the lockup occurs much less frequently and looks different (flickering windows as opposed to glitchy wash of colored pixels).

Aside from testing the newer upstream kernel, I've also prepared this PPA with a change to the X driver that is believed to fix some of these gpu lockups on i915/i945:

https://launchpad.net/~bryce/+archive/fig

Please give it a try. When you do, make sure to boot against the stock ubuntu kernel. Otherwise we won't be sure whether it is this ppa or the upstream kernel that fixes it.

The upside to getting proof that this PPA solves it, is that we may be able to get this fix into natty, whereas if it is only fixed by newer kernel code, we still need to isolate what patch in the kernel does it. And, this late in the cycle we likely won't be able to get kernel fixes in so they'll have to be processed as SRUs.

Hey alexandr-martynjuk,

You filed this bug report against natty, but I see it's still open and
doesn't appear to have much activity recently. So, now that oneiric
is released and stable, this may be a good point for you to upgrade
and re-test if this issue is still present there.

If it's solved in the new release and you think it's worth backporting
the fix, please indicate that. Or if having the fix in the new release
is good enough, feel free to close out the bug (or let us know and we'll
close it.)

If it's not solved, leave the bug report open. I can't promise we'll
get to it (we get way more bugs filed than we can usually get to), but
your testing and feedback can help out if and when we do.

<email address hidden>, thank you for reporting this bug and helping make Ubuntu better. This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux <replace-with-bug-number>

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Hi

Thank you fore the feed back on this buck. I try to contribute to Linux as
much as i can but i am not a computer expert. This bug come up when i wash
assembling a computer from old hardware. Did not pay a lot of attention to
whey it hang.

The computer that i made from the old parts does not function they i
should. The first trouble shooting i what to do is to exclude my self from
the problem. It is possible that i did do something wrong.

With kind regards
