Bug Description

Binary package hint: banshee

I am running the recent beta version of Ubuntu 10.10 and try to use Banshee (1.7.5) from the Ubuntu repositories. Banshee worked quite well until I started my computer two days ago, wanting to listen to some music. When I try to start Banshee now, the main window appears, but it does not respond. The program seems to simply freeze. The window gets gray after a few seconds and that's it. Apport does not offer to submit a bug report, so I do this manually. When I try to start the program from a terminal, this is what I get:

phil@phil-desktop:~$ banshee
[Info 18:27:17.129] Running Banshee 1.7.5: [Ubuntu maverick (development branch) (linux-gnu, i686) @ 2010-09-07 19:18:43 UTC]
[Info 18:27:18.326] Updating web proxy from GConf
[Info 18:27:18.429] All services are started 1,05819
[Info 18:27:19.630] nereid Client Started
[Warn 18:27:19.827] Failed to load media-player-info file for

And then the program stops working. All I can do from that point on is to force-close the program.

Hope this helps. If any futher information is required, please tell me.

Phil,
Do you have any extensions (v. 1.7.4-1ubuntu1) installed?
For me installing any extension causes banshee to freeze.

Harry,
I checked the package manager and found that none of the extensions that
are listed there are installed.

Hi,

Although banshee works in one of my laptops, I'm seeing this freeze in my 1005-PE netbook. I found that if I run banshee with dbus disabled:

banshee --disable-dbus

it does not freeze anymore (I'm guessing this will create problems, maybe with loading music players?) but at least it doesn't freeze anymore.

Regards

Hi,

I can confirm that Banshee runs with --disable-dbus.
Thank you.

Since the last bunch of Updates for Ubuntu 10.10, Banshee seems to be running fine again. At least it does not keep freezing anymore.

I can confirm that "banshee --disable-dbus" solved my problem with Banshee freezing:

Banshee Lock up/Freeze Problems:
- The directory watcher extension would sense a new file, which would cause it to lock up.
- Banshee would complete playback of the first selected song, but then stop/lock up after that.

I'm still having this problem. Disabling the DBus interface with --disable-dbus seems to fix it.

Well, that was some retarded error reporting on my part. Missed most of the information that'd make debugging easier :)

So, I'm on Maverick Meekrat, with all updates installed. Banshee version is 1.7.6 (from package 1.7.6-0ubuntu1). Enabling debug information for Banshee and Addins doesn't seem to produce any interesting information (debug info for a healthy instance and a freezing one are pretty much the same).

The problem seems to come and go. Sometimes Banshee will load and work without a hitch, then next time it'll freeze on load. Using --disable-dbus seems to fix it every time, but then I lose the ability to control Banshee from the keyboard, etc.

I see a fix has been released, but either it's not yet in the Meekrat repos, or it isn't working for me. Where could I download a version of Banshee with the fix and try for myself?

You can download the source tarball from www.banshee.fm and compile it yourself.
Otherwise you can wait a day or so more for binaries to be uploaded to
http://launchpad.net/~banshee-team/+archive/ppa.

For me Banshee is not responding when i import a folder.
I am not letting Banshee watch my media folder as I manually import the media I want.

Until the dist-upgrade from 10.04 to 10.10 Banshee was working fine but now I can't use it anymore. :-(

The workaround with --disable-dbus didn't work for me.
