I changed the nvidia settings to separate x screen for 2 screens and rebooted. It booted OK until the Ubuntu screen came up with the dots these stopped changing colour and the computer just hung.

Thanks for reporting your issues.

Please try to boot your computer without usplash to confirm if this bug can really be attributed to usplash by following these steps:

1. Press Esc during Grub boot delay to access the boot menu.
2. Select your actual Ubuntu boot line and press "e" to edit it.
3. Select the "kernel" line and press "e" to edit it.
4. At the end of the line, remove "splash" and "quiet" and press "enter".
5. Type "b" to boot the custom boot line.

If your computer still has problems when booting without usplash, most probably you are experiencing a kernel bug which should be filed against the appropriate kernel package.

Thank you for your reply

I have tried what you suggested. However Grub did not work in the way
you described. I used the suggested commands in grub boot menu to delete
the words you suggested and booted. It went to login at command line and
I couldn't because I did'nt know how get any further.

I have now booted via safe graphics and deleted and reinstalled nvidia
driver so I can now work with single screen.

Ubuntu Kernel: Linux 2.6.35-15-generic

Regards

Brian

Did you see any error message shown on the command line login screen?

If not, the issue might be related to gdm because you could boot but gdm didn't show up.

On that command line, enter your username and password (the caracters won't be shown). And enter "startx" (without quotes) to start the graphical display. If that works with your two screens, then the problem should be on gdm.
If not, please let us know what happens.

thanks,
pura vida.
